The annual MOTOR awards recognize new tools and technologies developed for automotive diagnosis, service and repair.

ADAS2Alignment was developed around a question increasingly relevant to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): **After an ADAS calibration-recalibration, what direction is the vehicle actually pointing and how can it be documented, proving the vehicle is back to OE accuracy?**

Modern ADAS-equipped vehicles rely on cameras, RADAR and other sensor applications whose operation is tied to vehicle geometry and positioning. Wheel alignment, tires, ride height, thrust angle and even the pitch and roll of the surface supporting the alignment rack can affect the physical references used during portions of the alignment and calibration process.

ADAS2Alignment addresses that documentation gap by evaluating alignment and vehicle-geometry data associated with ADAS calibration-recalibration. The technology calculates pre-and-post procedures and documents the vehicle’s directional geometry, creating a measurable connection between vehicle's alignment conditions and the calibration-recalibration process - precisely to 1/100th of an inch.

“ADAS calibration is no longer simply about whether the scan tool or calibration equipment reports that a procedure was completed,” said **Pam Oakes, ADAS2Alignment developer, automotive applications engineer, ASE Master Automotive Technician/L4 and ADAS subject-matter expert**. “The geometry underneath that calibration also needs to be documented. Alignment measurements can appear within specification while the vehicle still has a directional condition relevant to ADAS.”

The technology evaluates alignment data and other geometric measurements that may not be readily apparent from a conventional alignment printout. Its calculations, corrections, and documentation can also be applied to ride-height-altered vehicles and vehicle classifications ranging from Class 1 through Class 8.

The recognition comes as ADAS calibration documentation continues to be discussed within the collision, mechanical repair, calibration and vehicle safety communities. At a recent automotive industry meeting in Detroit focused on ADAS, participants discussed the need for documentation establishing vehicle conditions and measurements associated with calibration-recalibration procedures.

“The technology in today's vehicles has changed to what needs to be measured and documented,” Oakes said. “As ADAS continues to evolve, the industry is having a broader conversation about how vehicle geometry relates to calibration and how that relationship is documented.”
